11.05.12 1950′s Number Plates

We found these two old american license plates on ebay. They date from 1950′s Minnesota and feature some beautiful angular vernacular typography. One thing i’ve always found interesting is that the lettering style on vintage american license plates in many cases seems to have been specific to each state – almost as if they are an expression of the region’s personality. It is more likely that many of these typographic styles were born of production processes and constraints than artistic ingenuity, but this is what makes them so unexpected and inspiring to look at.
